The Madrid Masters is the 3rd and last clay court Master Series of the year. The previous two events where hosted by Monte Carlo and Rome. Rafael Nadal clinched the title in both events and aims to complete the hat-trick on home soil, in Madrid.

The 2009 edition was the first one played on outside clay courts, as the tournament was moved for the month of May and hosted by the brand new Park Manzanares complex. The change brought a new record. The Madrid Masters 2009 provided the longest tennis encounter played by the rules of best out of 3 sets in the Open Era. Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic played an astonishing 4 hours and 2 minutes long battle which saw the Spaniard qualify for the Final.

Roger Federer won the title last year after a one way straight sets final, which involved an exhausted Rafael Nadal. The Madrid Masters 2010 announces to be another highly interesting tournament. Although several important players can’t start the event, due to various injuries, the pack is still on for an epic battle.

The Indian Wells is as usual a Masters Series 1000 event in the ATP race and a Premier Mandatory event of the WTA tour. The Winners of this tournament will collect 1000 ATP/WTA points, this is half of the amount earned for winning a Grand Slam event.

This year’s defending title holders are Rafael Nadal for the Men’s tournament and Vera Zvonareva in the Women’s competition.

The Indian Wells WTA event has quite a big list with important names that retired from this year’s Indian Wells competition: Kateryna Bondarenko, Dinara Safina, Elena Vesnina, Serena Williams, Venus Williams. The main seed is Svetlana Kuznetsova followed by Caroline Wozniacki.

The Indian Wells ATP tournament has also a few big names which fail to start this year’s edition: Juan Martín del Potro (wrist injury), Fernando González (helping with aid in Chile), Tommy Haas (hip surgery), Lleyton Hewitt (hip surgery), Stanislas Wawrinka, Mikhail Youzhny. The top seed is Roger Federer followed by Novak Djokovic and last year’s winner, Rafael Nadal.

The schedule for the BNP Paribas Open event is March 8 – March 21 for both Men’s and Women’s competitions. The tournament is hosted by the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, California. All tennis matches are played on outdoor hard courts.
