ATP Cincinnati has come a long way since its inception well over a century ago. It has risen to the status of being an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event, which means that is part of the nine tournament series in a season, which stands second only in importance to that of the four major Grand Slams. ATP Cincinnati is held annually in August, the time of the season in which the main focus of all competitive players is simply getting ready for the US Open Grand Slam which quickly follows on from the action in Ohio.
Under its current moniker of the Western & Southern Open, the event is part of the Emirates Airline US Open Series, so not only does it hold the importance of being a high ranking tournament in its own right, but it is also a key build up to the US Open, a chance for players to build momentum and form ahead of the Grand Slam. With that in mind and the importance of the tournament, it is an event in which being s world number one heading into it has carried a lot of weight.
Nine of the ten ATP Cincinnati tournaments held between 2004 and 2013 inclusive was won by s player who had at one time or another, held the number one spot in the world rankings. That just speaks volumes about how tough it is to win the Western & Southern Open. The greats like Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, Ivan Lendl, Pete Sampras and Boris Becker have all tasted victory here and amongst the current crop of players riding at the top of the sport, well, they have dominated proceedings.
Rafael Nadal, as part of his remarkable 2013 season after coming back from injury, captured the Cincinnati title for the first time in his career. Britain’s Andy Murray won it twice in 2008 and 2011, since 2005 and following Roger Federer’s inaugural win at the tournament, the Swiss legend has gotten his hands on the trophy five times between then and 2012. So the great one has certainly left his stamp on one of the great tournaments around the tennis circuit.
The first ever Cincinnati Masters was held back in 1899 and it has remained a hard court tournament ever since, and is now one of the six ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events which is played on hard surface. Back in 2013, Novak Djokovic was chasing down a bit of history at ATP Cincinnati. He was looking to become the first singles player ever to capture all nine ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles in his career. He fell short though being beaten in a surprise result against John Isner in the quarter finals.
Being an important part of the Emirates US Open series alongside the likes of the Rogers Cup in Canada, the prize purse runs at over $3,000,000, so there is big money, big ranking points and a place in the history books of one of the most prestigious tennis tournament around to be gained. The Lindner Family Tennis Centre in Cincinnati hosts the event, and the ATP Cincinnati is the oldest tournament in the US and remains the biggest summer tournament on the season.
