Novak Djokovic is the surprise of the year. The Serbian star managed to finish for the first time in history a season as World No. 1. He did not show any serious signs of not being able to defend his crown in 2012. Djokovic won 3 Grand Slam events and 5 Masters Series events to complete and incredible season. Congratulations!

Rafael Nadal couldn’t repeat the excellent year that he had in 2010 and has to accept yet another season end as World No. 2. The Spaniard has now 2 years of World No. 1 and 4 of World No. 2, an amazing performance at such an young age. Rafa won a single Slam this season, his favorite, the Roland Garros. He lost two Finals against Djokovic, at Wimbledon and at the US Open. More, he also lost a series of Masters Series 1000 finals against the same player at: Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid and Rome. The only Masters that he won was in Monte Carlo.

Roger Federer played his worst season since becoming a tennis star. Even the exceptional finish couldn’t help him to save the year. Federer’s only tournaments won in 2011 where in Basel, Paris and London, the final tournaments of the year. He just managed to clinch the 3rd spot of the ATP rankings and records his lowest ranking in 9 years. Can he recover in 2012?

Andy Murray had a good year which could have been his best with a little bit of luck and no injuries. He lost one more Grand Slam final. His 3rd one, against Novak Djokovic. The previous 2 where lost against Federer. Murray grabbed 2 Masters Series events and finished the year just behind Federer after staying for several weeks on the 3rd spot ahead of the Swiss star. He certainly can improve in 2012!

Roger Federer and Florian Mayer clash on Sunday for the ATP Stockholm Final. This is an ATP 250 tournament hosted in Sweden. The Swiss star aims for his 64th ATP title. This will tie him with Pete Sampras on the 4th spot in the open era. Jimmy Connors is the leader in this ranking with 109 titles, followed by Ivan Lendl with 94 and John McEnroe standing at 77.

Federer vs Mayer has been played twice so far. The Swiss Champion has won both encounters and starts as a huge favorite the ATP Stockholm Final.

Roger Federer obtained a comfortable straight sets semifinal win against, Croat Ivan Ljubicic. The Swiss encountered some problems in his quarterfinal match against Stanislas Wawrinka when he had to come back from 1 set behind. Federer will surly try to win this Final after losing last Sunday’s Shanghai match against Andy Murray.

Florian Mayer had an impressive run in Stockholm. He managed to defeat the home favorite, Robin Soderling, Feliciano Lopez and Jarkko Nieminen on his road to the final. He has the chance of winning his first ever ATP World Tour title.

Thank you for following the 2010 Shanghai Masters Final live with us. Andy Murray has won the tournament after a straight sets success. The Briton grabbed the first set 6-3, managing two breaks of serve and some astonishing points. Everyone anticipated a Roger Federer comeback in the second set. The Madrid Masters is the 3rd and last clay court Master Series of the year. The previous two events where hosted by Monte Carlo and Rome. Rafael Nadal clinched the title in both events and aims to complete the hat-trick on home soil, in Madrid.

The 2009 edition was the first one played on outside clay courts, as the tournament was moved for the month of May and hosted by the brand new Park Manzanares complex. The change brought a new record. The Madrid Masters 2009 provided the longest tennis encounter played by the rules of best out of 3 sets in the Open Era. Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic played an astonishing 4 hours and 2 minutes long battle which saw the Spaniard qualify for the Final.

Roger Federer won the title last year after a one way straight sets final, which involved an exhausted Rafael Nadal. The Madrid Masters 2010 announces to be another highly interesting tournament. Although several important players can’t start the event, due to various injuries, the pack is still on for an epic battle.

The Indian Wells is as usual a Masters Series 1000 event in the ATP race and a Premier Mandatory event of the WTA tour. The Winners of this tournament will collect 1000 ATP/WTA points, this is half of the amount earned for winning a Grand Slam event.

This year’s defending title holders are Rafael Nadal for the Men’s tournament and Vera Zvonareva in the Women’s competition.

The Indian Wells WTA event has quite a big list with important names that retired from this year’s Indian Wells competition: Kateryna Bondarenko, Dinara Safina, Elena Vesnina, Serena Williams, Venus Williams. The main seed is Svetlana Kuznetsova followed by Caroline Wozniacki.

The Indian Wells ATP tournament has also a few big names which fail to start this year’s edition: Juan Martín del Potro (wrist injury), Fernando González (helping with aid in Chile), Tommy Haas (hip surgery), Lleyton Hewitt (hip surgery), Stanislas Wawrinka, Mikhail Youzhny. The top seed is Roger Federer followed by Novak Djokovic and last year’s winner, Rafael Nadal.

The schedule for the BNP Paribas Open event is March 8 – March 21 for both Men’s and Women’s competitions. The tournament is hosted by the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, California. All tennis matches are played on outdoor hard courts.

In 2010 the ATP Dubai is scheduled during the 8th Week of the season. It starts on February 22 and ends Sunday, February 21.

This year’s defending trophy holder is Serbian, Novak Djokovic. Djokovic will try to defend his 500 ATP points to maintain a solid 2nd spot in the ATP rankings, obtained right at the end of the 2010 Australian Open.

Roger Federer and other important stars like Rafael Nadal and Andy Roddick have pulled out of this year’s ATP Dubai Championship. The first two quit because of injuries while Roddick joined a long series of protests against the organizers, because of the Shahar Pe’er scandal.

Shahar Pe’er wasn’t allowed to compete in the WTA tournament earlier this year because of her Israeli nationality and this resulted in several protests and sanctions applied to the organizers.
